Suffering Bastard Cocktail Recipe | Classic Egyptian Drink

An exotic Egyptian cocktail created in the 1940s at one of Cairo’s popular bars. This complex formula boldly combines brandy, gin, sweet citrus, ginger beer, and a dash of spicy Angostura bitters. The well-balanced flavour offers a medley of alcoholic notes, smoothly transitioning into a ginger-fruit aftertaste. Bartenders claim it’s an excellent remedy for hangovers.

angostura bitters

ginger beer

to taste

1 slice

pineapple

1 sprig

mint

1 slice

lime

1 piece

maraschino cherry

Method
  1. Add brandy, gin, lime juice, lime cordial, and 3 drops Angostura bitters to a shaker. Shake well.
  2. Fill a glass with ice and pour in a splash of ginger beer.
  3. Strain the cocktail into the glass.
  4. Top up with the remaining ginger beer.
  5. Garnish with a slice of pineapple, a lime wedge, a maraschino cherry, and a sprig of mint.
  6. Tip: If you don't have a maraschino cherry, you can use any cocktail cherry.
  7. The strength of your cocktail depends on the alcohol you choose.
